Do Cheap Cruises Skimp on Fun and Activities?

October 19, 2021 By admin

Do Cheap Cruises Skimp on Fun and Activities?

If you take the family on vacation on a low budget, you’ll stay in the No-Tell Motel and eat in the same fast food places that you see at home. Or you’ll be packed like sardines into a small camper to save money to see the local attractions.

Cruise travel levels the playing field in ways that you won’t find vacationing “on land.” You can tell the first-time cruisers when they arrive for dinner because they’re pleasantly surprised.

There are no cheap seats in the restaurant and the menu is the same regardless of which cabin you reserved. That’s such a surprise for budget travelers. You may be staying in a cabin on the lower decks that cost less, but you’re eating the same lobster tail entrée as the family who booked the upper deck suite with an ocean view balcony.

Each day you receive a bulletin with the next day’s shipboard activities. There are sports, contests, lectures, mingle parties, exercise classes, Yoga, Pilates, and deck walking – just to name a few.

You can enroll your children and teens in age-graded activities for no extra charge. There are even special movie nights and teen parties in the evening, so the parents or grandparents can enjoy a night out at the lavish Las Vegas-style live shows.

Or, you can go to a smaller lounge in an adult-only area for cocktails and the music of a jazz quartet. The price of this fabulous entertainment? No extra charge – it’s part of the cruise.

At home when your teens get hungry late at night a call for pizza, it’s a big charge – plus tip. On the cruise, they can call for pizza until late hours at no extra cost. Or you can all go to the Midnight Buffet, the most over-the-top food spread you’ll ever see.

Before leaving for shore excursions, crew members give informational sessions to tell you what to expect and suggest places to shop or eat. Usually, you receive coupon booklets for stores onshore.

You also have the chance to buy tickets for local attractions at a price that’s often better than what you would pay onshore. Needless to say, the attractions cater to the cruise ship trade and give them the best deals.

Another way to save money for shore excursions is for the family to eat a hearty breakfast or lunch on the ship before leaving. You can then sample local foods or decide to spend your money on souvenirs and tee shirts.

Use the time while eating on the ship to look over the shore maps and find at least two local points of interest that are free to inexpensive. Vacationers sometimes rush to reserve a scuba trip, only to spend most of the day waiting or transporting to the scuba site.

Meanwhile, they see nothing of the town or experience the local culture. Unless you are an experienced, die-hard scuba diver who finds this the ultimate event of the cruise, save the scuba for back home and enjoy the port of call.

Cruise travel is the most egalitarian form of vacation. The only difference is the price and location of your cabin. The fabulous food, onboard activities, children’s programs, and great service are the same for everyone. You’ll never get as much for the money on land as you do on the ship and you aren’t constantly looking for a place to buy gas.

Disney Cruise Line – Perfect for Family Fun!

Disney Cruise Line – Perfect for Family Fun!

Disney is a name long associated with light-hearted, family entertainment. The Disney Cruise is an extension of the fantasy and fun that’s part of the Disney theme parks. What started as a family cruise program has become a vacation option for all ages from families to couples to honeymooners.

The two Disney ships are decorated with a nod to old-world cruise elegance and a wink to the Disney icons. You must stay on the lookout for those “hidden Mickeys” the famous mouse outline that peeks out from unexpected places like wallpaper or the swirls of fine china.

The ship’s atrium is massive and provides a great meeting place for families and groups on the way to the next activity. One complaint that families often have about cruise travel is the need to walk through the smelly casinos to get to other public areas of the ship.

Disney Cruise Lines have the distinction of no casinos onboard, just wholesome entertainment so you can allow your older children and teens free access around the ship. Another distinctive that families appreciate is the “Soda Card” which lets any passenger receive unlimited sodas at the restaurants or the poolside beverage stands.

If you’ve never cruised before, on most ships you had to order a simple diet soda from the bar and pay bar tab prices for a soft drink. This popular feature – the soda card – is being copied by other ships.

Another great benefit of Disney cruises is the unusually generous cabin sizes. Knowing that the ships would attract families, Disney Cruise Lines have family cabins to hold six with a bath and a half.

Over 40% of the outside cabins have open balconies. Bathtub, mini-bar, safe, and hair dryers are standard equipment in all cabins. As nice as the cabins are, why stay inside where there are so many fantastic shipboard activities?

The Disney Children’s programs are well organized, creative, and clearly a step above the usual shipboard babysitting. Childcare begins for infants and toddlers. The Oceaneers (ages 3-7) have hands-on science games, Oceaneer Labs (ages 8-12) have marine biology game shows and the Teens enjoy a private club with video games, MP3 stations, and a soda bar.

These are free with only a charge for babysitting after 1 A.M. So where are the parents? They escape to a Broadway-style theatre, elegant reservations-only restaurant, spa, sports pub, piano bar, or the dance club.

Everyone looks forward to the day at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island. Since all children are automatically enrolled in the Castaway Club for supervised activities on the island, the adults can slip away to an adults-only beach or spend the day with the kids at the family beach with games and activities.

What’s a Disney vacation without a theme park? Not to worry. Cruise guests get special land-sea packages so after docking at Cape Canaveral, they are whisked away to Disneyworld in Orlando for the full theme park experience. This vacation is really the best of both worlds.

Finding Love and Romance on a Singles Cruise

October 19, 2021 By admin

Finding Love and Romance on a Singles Cruise

For years cruise travel was the domain of couples and some families. Even now the ships become more family-friendly. So what about a single person who wants to cruise? Recognizing that need, many ships offer special programs to make singles feel welcome and enjoy time socializing with other singles.

Solo cruising has been more expensive than couples cruising because half the cabin brings in no revenue. On some cruise lines that mean the solo cruises pay double or get stuck with a stranger as a roommate.

More ships are recognizing this concern and offering fair rates for solo cruisers who prefer to room alone. When you shop for a cruise, check the rates for the fair deals. Some cruise lines have a “find a cabin mate” program where you submit interests and the line attempts to match you, much like roommate matching in college dorms.

You can accept or reject the roommate match suggested for you. Once on the ship, you’ll find more activities for solo cruisers of all ages. Some cruise lines maintain the tradition of providing a “gentleman host” as a partner for dancing and dining to women traveling alone to register for this option.

While this tends to appeal to older travelers, there’s no age limit to participate. For younger solo cruisers there are singles mixers, separate from the regular welcome aboard parties. Other special events are planned for singles such as sports, karaoke, and dance club parties.

Finding romance on a cruise may be easier since you are more relaxed and in an atmosphere of fun. The stresses from work and home are back on the dock. You are there to have fun, which makes many people open up and be their true selves.

Don’t count on the singles events to produce a partner – be active all over the ship. At dinner, ask to be seated at a large table, don’t hide in the corner. Singles are often seated together at large tables to avoid breaking up a family group that wants more space.

Before entering the dining room, scan the embarkation photos on display in the lobby. If you see a great-looking person who is alone in the photo, chances are that person is a solo cruiser. So do some “window shopping” and know who you are looking for when you enter the dining room.

Get involved in activities that you enjoy; sports, spa, exercise classes, or shipboard games. Even if you are seated next to the grandmas, be friendly, and tell them you are single. You might find that they have a younger relative on board or they happen to be sitting with a single at dinner who’s also looking for other singles.

Families tend to go back to the cabins earlier. After the midnight buffet, you’ll see most of the singles staying up to the party. Be where they are and enjoy the evening. After all, you can sleep late. The party crowd also tends to arrive for late breakfast on the deck.

If you find a great partner, do shipboard romances last? So do, some don’t, but the romance at sea is a wonderful memory of a dream vacation with a dreamy partner by your side.

How Do Cruise Lines Stack Up Against One Another?

How Do Cruise Lines Stack Up Against One Another?

For many years, cruise travel was exclusive and expensive. Each traveler’s packed those huge, heavy steamer trunks filled with evening gowns and tuxedos as well as leisure clothes.

Today cruise travel is open to everyone at prices that fit your budget. In fact, cruising is an increasingly popular family vacation option as well as for family reunions. Think of choosing a cruise ship the way you choose a car.

Whether luxury sedan or bargain SUV, the car gets you where you are going, the question is more one of style than transportation. Several cruise ships can take you to the Bahamas for example, so the choice you make is about the features and style of the cruise ship.

Carnival Cruise Lines jumped out from the pack early to position their product as “the Fun Ship.” Carnival caters to families by offering special supervised programs for children and teens so the parents can enjoy time on their own.

The largest cruise line in the world, Carnival offers innovations such as the first smoke-free ship, Carnival Paradise, increased smoke-free zones, Internet Cafes, and the renowned Nautica Spa – now called SpaCarnival.

Disney Cruise Lines incorporated their characters and fantasy world onto the ship experience. To enhance the family-friendly image, Disney Cruise Ships do not have any casinos. The children’s programs are top-notch – plus, there are some kid-free zones in restaurants and the spa for adults to unwind.

Holland America is among the old guard of cruising. Purchased by Carnival, the Nordic heritage of Holland America is evident in its gracious service and well-mannered staff. The cruise experience is slightly more traditional which attracts higher-income passengers who prefer the old cruise elegance. Children’s programs are best during summer vacation months.

Royal Caribbean started the massive center atrium design that is common on newer ships. As the smaller ships are replaced by newer ones, Royal Caribbean is adding Wi-Fi zones, Internet Cafe, and offering a CyberCabin for an additional fee. Another feature on the new ships will be a non-smoking major lounge and smoke-free zones in many public areas.

Windstar Ships are small, catering to 148 to 250 passengers compared with thousands on the major lines. The Windstar passenger is typically younger, active, and prefers the “Casual Elegance” which is the official dress code. Each ship has a water sports platform for passengers to participate in wind sailing, snorkeling, scuba, and water skiing.

Looking at these and the many other cruises, which one is the best? That answer depends on the type of vacation you want, the level of activity, degree of formality, availability of children’s programs, and maximum amenities v. budget price. The great thing about cruise travel is that you can get to the same destination for different prices depending on the cruise package that’s right for you.

Last Minute Cruise Deals Could Net You a Bargain!

Last Minute Cruise Deals Could Net You a Bargain!

If you’re a spur-of-the-moment person (or if you’ll do anything for a bargain), then you need to shop for the last-minute cruise deals. Within a few weeks to days of sailing, ships take inventory for the sold rooms minus cancellations.

What is leftover are empty cabins – which mean lost revenue. Since the ship is sailing anyway, the cruise line does what retailers do – they put the rooms out for deep discount prices.

Here’s where you can grab major deals on the best cruises, but you have to act fast. How good are these deals? You can save from 40% up to 80%. A quick search showed these examples within a 60-day window:

Seattle to Alaska – $3,000 reduced to $899
Miami to the Bahamas, $799 now $239 due to 2nd Price Reduction
The Caribbean from San Juan, Puerto Rico, $1,669 now $479, 71% reduction
San Diego, CA to Mexico – $1,669 down to $499, 70% reduction

Even the exotic cruise locations can be purchased at a discount if you check daily and are ready to buy when the deal opens. You can take a trip of a lifetime at almost two for one deal, like these:

Fort Lauderdale thru the Panama Canal – $12,500 down to $6,500, 50% reduction
Lower Italy around the Mediterranean – $2,500, now $900 with 64% reduction
Honolulu around the Islands – $3,800, now $1,600, a 57% reduction

How do you find these deals? First, you need to subscribe to several discount cruise travel sites. Set up your information account with the specifics of location and types of cruise that interest you.

If you like a particular cruise line, you can also register at the cruise line site and set up a personal information account. On every cruise site where you are registered, set up an “alert” so you will receive an email when a cruise that fits your preference becomes available.

Don’t forget the local travel agent. Let the agent know about your interests in cruise travel and your willingness to be a last-minute journey. The agent may have clients who booked a cruise but for health or other reasons have to back out. If the agent knows you are interested, you can get a first chance at the deal.

Last-minute cruising doesn’t mean you’ll get a call from the ship saying be here in two hours. More likely, you’ll know a few weeks ahead of time. Since many ships have Internet Cafes, last-minute cruising can work for entrepreneurs who don’t punch the clock anyway but need to stay in touch with their businesses. Better still, just “unplug” yourself and really enjoy the cruise.

Remember to check your passport and keep it updated. Have a tentative packing list of cruise travel clothes so you can pack and go quickly. For the adventure-minded, the bargains are wonderful but so is the mystery of where and when you’re vacationing.
